Beck
"Mixed Bizness"
Midnite Vultures
DGC
1999

"Mixed Bizness" was the second single from the severely underrated Midnite Vultures. It's funny that this album was consider more of a follow-up to the 1996 classic Odelay than the decidedly more low-key mellow Mutations, which was released in 1998. Apparently the record company was unhappy with Mutations, because it was a stylistic 180 from Odelay with its more acoustic-based sound.

I really like the album and this song. Come to think of it, I like anything Beck does. "Mixed Bizness" combines Beck's freestyle lyrics with a really funky, danceable beat.

While the song is good, the video is even better. St├ęphane Sednaoui directed the video. He directed the famous "Give It Away" video for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Alanis Morissette's "Ironic." Trippy visuals and Beck hangin' out on a beach with his half-buried band along with an interesting cast of characters including bikini-clad women with sharks on their heads. Check it out below.
