ultimate cowbell update: #1462,#3841 - #3882

The #UCDb is a living, breathing organism. As such, we are constantly updating entries as new info comes available. A substantial edit has been made to entry #1462. The previous entry was for Arctic Monkeys B-side, “Bad Woman.”

It was discovered during regular research that the proper artist to credit for this song is Death Ramps featuring Richard Hawley. (Death Ramps are an alias/alter-ego of Arctic Monkeys.)

It was further discovered that “Bad Woman” is in fact a cover of a semi-obscure late-60s garage rock tune by Pat Farrell and The Believers. You can check out the updated entry here: http://www.ultimatecowbell.com/songview.php?idsongperm=1462

The Ultimate Leap Year Cowbell Songs

OK, most of these playlists we make here at the #UCDb are pretty straightforward—either the song name or artist/band name has a term that was at least vaguely related to the theme of the playlist.

On this one, however, we had to take some liberties. We really wanted to make one for such a unique day. We did some research and found 12 songs on the #UCDb that we could construe as being related to the story of Leap Day/Leap Year.

Therefore, we believe this playlist warrants some explanation. Thankfully, this day only comes around (pretty much) once every 4 years. Here you go:

  1. Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
“Pigs (Three Different Ones) (Live)” [Pink Floyd]
This one was pretty easy. This is song #366 in the #UCDb. There are 366 days in a Leap Year. Plus, frog is in the band name and frogs are associated with Leap Day/Year due to their leaping abilities. Unfortunately, this song is not on Spotify for whatever reason. But, the next 11 that comprise this playlist are.
  2. Fireball Ministry
    “Maidens of Venus”
Another easy easy one. This is song #229. In the states, we write the date in the MM/DD/YYYY format, much to the dismay of the rest of the world. The date for Leap Day (February 29th) in America is 02/29.
  3. The Dirtbombs
    “Sugar on Top”
This one is for much of Europe, Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East, Australia, etc. that write the date in the DD/MM/YYYY format. This is song #2902 (29/02/2016).
  4. The Egyptian Lover
    “Freak-a-Holic”
This is where the history begins. It was the Egyptians who first had the idea of incorporating a Leap Day into the calendar in order to keep it in sync with the solar year. (link)
  5. STRFKR
    “Reginald Gregory Erickson the Second”
The modern calendar currently in use by much of the world was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. (link) It fixed the “Leap Year error” in the Julian Calendar. (link)
  6. Julian Casablancas
    “The 11th Dimension”
Julius Caesar introduced the Leap Day as part of his “reforms” in the 1st century BCE. (link)
  7. Van Halen
    “Drop Dead Legs”
This is song #1461 on the #UCDb. You have a 1 in 1461 chance of being born on Leap Day (365 x 4 + 1). (link) And as a happy coincidence, this song comes from Van Halen’s album, 1984, released in, you guessed it, 1984—a Leap Year!
  8. The Monkees
    “Circle Sky”
This one has been included in our Chinese New Year: Year of the Monkey playlist, but this one is on here because Davy Jones died on February 29, 2012. (link)
  9. Marc Anthony
    “I Need to Know”
Anthony, Texas, is the Leap Year Capital of the World. Why? Just ‘cus no one else had proclaimed it. It shares the celebration with its neighbor just across the border in Anthony, New Mexico. (link)
  10. Toad the Wet Sprocket
    “Come Down”
As mentioned above, frogs are the animal generally associated with Leap Day/Year. We couldn’t come up with another frog song, so here’s a toad song.
  11. Mariachi El Bronx
    Revolution Girls”
A Leap Year is caused by the time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun, which is approximately 365 ¼ days. Everyone knows that. But, this song is pretty kick ass, though.
  12. Everything But the Girl
“Corcovado (Knee Deep Classic Club Mix)”
An easy one. This is #2016 on the #UCDb.

…And, finally, here’s the playlist:

ultimate cowbell update: #731,#3750 - #3796

The #UCDb is a living, breathing organism. We are constantly updating entries as new info comes available. It is with a heavy heart that we must remove “Revolution” by The Beatles. It was included originally due to its inclusion on the Geek Speak Weekly list. However, after much deliberation and research, it has been determined that there is no cowbell in any version of “Revolution,” whether it’s version 0, 1, 2, 9, or take 20.

Therefore, there is a new #731 in the #UCDb: Red Shape: “Moods & Mice”
